Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer said by video that Microsoft will release a new mobile OS for embedded and enterprise devices based on Windows Mobile 6.5, to be followed by an enterprise-focused version of Windows Phone 7 in 2011. More info can be found at pcmag.

This web site and forum contains over 10 years of useful content for Windows Mobile users. The site began in 1998 as handheldpcmag.com, became pocketpcmag.com, and now is smartphonemag.com. Microsoft in the meantime changed its lexicon from â€œHandheld PCâ€ to â€œPalm-sized PCâ€ to â€œPocket PCâ€ to â€œSmartphoneâ€ and now to â€œWindows Phoneâ€. Microsoft referred to the underlying operating system as â€œWindows CEâ€, â€œWindows Mobileâ€ and now just â€œWindowsâ€.

Should Windows rather than Windows Mobile run on phones?

Mary Jo Foley has an interesting blog entitled: A single Windows platform for phones and PCs: Can it be done? In it she discussed the possibility of putting Windows kernel (instead of Windows CE, which underlies Windows Mobile) on an ARM chip for a phone. It's just speculation, but a good read.

Microsoft to open own stores like Apple

Interestingly enough, even in these difficult times, according to Reuters Microsoft is going to follow Apple's lead and open Microsoft stores.

Actually, given Microsoft's dominence in the business world, I think it makes a lot of sense. Not only can Microsoft appeal to consumers with Windows Mobile, Zune, XBox and, of course, Vista, it can service small and medium-sized businesses through its stores.

We also just moved all our site content from a Microsoft based server to a Linux server. The move is the culmination of two years of effort migrating our great and massive content from a hodge podge of mostly ASP code to a Drupal, a Content Management System, written in PHP. Drupal will run more comfortably on the Linux server.

Scary - incommunicado in Israel
